💔 When you don’t “qualify” for support, but your heart is still breaking.

A couple of years ago, I was out rollerblading with a friend (hello, abandoned COVID hobbies!) and she told me about someone close to her who was going through a breakup.

Safety first ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Safety first ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

She’d gone to her GP for support, but when she filled out the mental health questionnaire, she didn’t meet the criteria for clinical depression or anxiety. It meant she couldn’t access a rebate/mental health care rebate for psychology sessions.

<Confusion has entered the chat>

Now, the GP wasn’t doing anything wrong, they were simply following the system.

My sense is that confusion arose around what it means to get a mental health care plan from your GP and what support looks like in this space.

Regardless, the experience left her feeling disoriented, confused, and a little dismissed, as though her pain wasn’t “bad enough” to count.

So, let's clear up the confusion:

Heartbreak is hard, even if it doesn’t tick a diagnostic box. You might not have clinical anxiety or depression, but you might still be lying awake at night, feeling numb, or crying in the shower. You need and deserve support through this.

That moment planted a seed for me. I wanted to create something for people in that space, especially young women going through a break up who need immediate, compassionate, short term support.

So that’s what I do now. 💕 I have blogs and freebies and sessions dedicated to helping young women in their 'break up era.' (Look at me trying to use Swiftie parlance)

At Brisbane Couples Counselling, I offer individual sessions (in person or telehealth, PJs welcome) at $165. Most clients come for around 6 weeks while they move through the raw grief of a break up, some will do a little longer and some come back in when they’re ready for love again.

If that sounds like where you are, you don’t have to wait until you “qualify.”

You just have to start.
